Maybe this self-important jackass thought he was being cultured and polite by recognizing my country of origin (the manager informed him of my heritage when she was talking him down from a blowup). But after he tore me a new one because I put a few more mililiters of hot water in his lungo than he would have liked, releasing five minutes of diatribe in front of a full lobby and cafe where I worked as a waitress, he may as well have thrown the coffee in my face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may think of an immigrant as someone who comes from a radically different culture, has darker skin than you do, maybe has a different religion. But technically and culturally, I am an immigrant. I left my country of origin, and attempted to establish a new life in a new country. That is the official definition of an immigrant. Even if you don\u2019t see me as an immigrant, we can certainly agree that I am a foreigner, and most places I go, I am the only foreigner in the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ale kulturn\u011b i celkov\u011b vzato jsem imigrantem i j\u00e1. Opustila jsem rodnou zemi s c\u00edlem zakotvit v nov\u00e9m \u017eivot\u011b v nov\u00e9 zemi. To je ofici\u00e1ln\u00ed definice imigranta. A ikdy\u017e m\u011b tak nevn\u00edm\u00e1te, ur\u010dit\u011b se shodneme, \u017ee jsem cizinka a v\u011bt\u0161inou, kdy\u017e n\u011bkam jdu, jsem tak\u00e9 jedin\u00fd cizinec v m\u00edstnosti.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the questions you ask may seem innocent to you, but they can make us feel alienated and uncomfortable. If you care about building good relationships with foreigners, or really with anyone new that you meet, it is important to know how you come across in conversation. Allow me to share with you some things I have heard over the past six years and what I wish the person asking the questions had known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dovolte mi se s v\u00e1mi pod\u011blit o v\u011bci, kter\u00e9 se mi b\u011bhem uplynul\u00fdch \u0161esti let p\u0159ihodily a co bych si p\u0159\u00e1la, aby z\u00fa\u010dastn\u011bn\u00e9 osoby znaly<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201eWhere are you from?\u201c \u2013 This question is innocent, but we do get asked it the most. It can and often does get tiresome, especially if we were going about our lives or talking about something interesting, and then we have to answer the same question again. If possible, get to know us a bit better, and we may even tell you without you having to ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Believe me, in our conversation, no one knows I am a foreigner better than I do. Depending on what my language capabilities are, I may be extremely self-conscious about my accent. I may have even been harassed, mistreated, or mocked because of it. Regardless, you don\u2018t need to draw my attention to it, especially if you feel compelled to tell me it is weird or shocking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

V\u011b\u0159te mi, b\u011bhem hovoru si nikdo neuv\u011bdomuje v\u00edc, \u017ee jsem cizinka, ne\u017e j\u00e1 sama. Z\u00e1le\u017e\u00ed na jazykov\u00fdch dovednostech, ale v\u011bt\u0161inou je n\u00e1m nep\u0159\u00edjemn\u00e9, \u017ee neum\u00edme mluvit t\u00edmto jazykem tak plynule. Je dost mo\u017en\u00e9, \u017ee jsme kv\u016fli p\u0159\u00edzvuku byli poni\u017eov\u00e1ni, \u0161ikanov\u00e1ni nebo zesm\u011b\u0161\u0148ov\u00e1ni (j\u00e1 osobn\u011b mnohokr\u00e1t). Ka\u017edop\u00e1dn\u011b n\u00e1m fakt nemus\u00edte zd\u016fraz\u0148ovat, \u017ee v\u00e1m n\u00e1\u0161 p\u0159\u00edzvuk zn\u00ed zvl\u00e1\u0161tn\u011b nebo divn\u011b.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201eThis new language is hard, isn\u2019t it? (insert any details about the given language). How long have you been studying it?\u201c – There is nothing wrong with these questions, but we also get asked them a lot. And do you talk about these things (the nuances of your language\u2019s grammar) with your friends and family over coffee? Not likely, because there are so many other interesting things to talk about in the world! You can politely say you admire our language skills, but a greater compliment is if you just talk with us about anything, like you would with anyone else. It is one of the greatest feelings in the world, when you are fighting to make your place in your new home, and those around you treat you like you belong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pravd\u011bpodobn\u011b ne, proto\u017ee je na sv\u011bt\u011b tolik zaj\u00edmav\u011bj\u0161\u00edch v\u011bc\u00ed, o kter\u00fdch se d\u00e1 mluvit. M\u016f\u017eete ocenit na\u0161e jazykov\u00e9 dovednosti, ale je\u0161t\u011b lep\u0161\u00ed by pro n\u00e1s bylo, kdybyste se s n\u00e1mi prost\u011b bavili o \u010demkoliv jako s k\u00fdmkoliv dal\u0161\u00edm. Je to kr\u00e1sn\u00fd pocit, kdy\u017e se sna\u017e\u00edte zapadnout do nov\u00e9ho domova a va\u0161e okol\u00ed se k v\u00e1m chov\u00e1, jako kdybyste do n\u011bj skute\u010dn\u011b pat\u0159ili.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201eWhy here?\u201c \u2013 again, not a bad question, but we get it a LOT. You can try asking more open ended questions: what sort of foods do you like from here? Have you found anything here you like to do in your spare time? What is your favorite thing about living here?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201eIs it better here than in your home country?\u201c \u2013 There is no good way to answer this question. If I say no, I may offend you and get homesick for my country \u2013 no one wins. If I say yes, there is probably something really terrible about my home country or life there, and I dont want to be reminded about it\u2013 I lose. You can try asking an open-ended question, such as \u201ewhat are things that stan dout to you about here?\u201c \u201eWhat are some things you love about your home country?\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kdy\u017e \u0159eknu, \u017ee to tu lep\u0161\u00ed je, bude to vypadat, \u017ee je s moj\u00ed domovinou n\u011bco hrozn\u011b \u0161patn\u00e9ho, na co nechci myslet \u2013 tak\u017ee prohraju j\u00e1. Znovu m\u016f\u017eete zkusit otev\u0159enou ot\u00e1zku, jako nap\u0159\u00edklad \u201eco t\u011b tady nejv\u00edc zaujalo?\u201c nebo \u201eco m\u00e1\u0161 nejv\u00edc r\u00e1da na Americe?\u201c<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201eDo you miss your family?\u201c – \u2026. No, they are all seri\u00e1l killers and I fled my country under threat of death (JOKE in my case. My family is wonderful!). You are most likely just trying to be thoughtful and sympathetic, and that is very kind of you, but the way it is worded is kind of awkward. If I don\u2019t miss my family, the reasons are probably at least uncomfortable, if not painful, to talk about. If I do miss my family, it may make me sad to talk about missing them, especially if you and I have just met.  Try asking me open ended questions about my family \u2013 how many siblings I have, what we like to do together, if we have gone on any trip together\u2026 really anything you would ask your local friends about their family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201eChyb\u00ed ti rodina?\u201c -\u2026. Ne, jsou to sam\u00ed s\u00e9riov\u00ed vrazi, musela jsem sem ut\u00e9ct p\u0159ed v\u00fdhru\u017ekami smrt\u00ed (VTIP! Moje rodina je skv\u011bl\u00e1!).  Pravd\u011bpodobn\u011b se jenom sna\u017e\u00edte b\u00fdt mil\u00ed a hodn\u00ed, a to je od v\u00e1s velmi p\u011bkn\u00e9, ale ta ot\u00e1zka je poskl\u00e1dan\u00e1 trochu divn\u011b. Kdyby mi moje rodina nechyb\u011bla, patrn\u011b by za t\u00edm byly n\u011bjak\u00e9 ne zcela p\u0159\u00edjemn\u00e9 d\u016fvody, o kter\u00fdch by mohlo b\u00fdt bolestiv\u00e9 mluvit. Pokud by mi rodina chyb\u011bla, mohlo by m\u011b tohle t\u00e9ma rozesmutnit, zvl\u00e1\u0161\u0165 pokud jsme se teprve potkali. Zkuste znovu jin\u00fd druh ot\u00e1zky. Kolik m\u00e1m sourozenc\u016f, jak spolu tr\u00e1v\u00edme \u010das, jestli jsme byli n\u011bkde na rodinn\u00e9m v\u00fdlet\u011b \u2013 skute\u010dn\u011b cokoliv, co byste se zeptali sv\u00e9ho \u201em\u00edstn\u00edho\u201c kamar\u00e1da ohledn\u011b jeho rodiny.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201eOh youre American? You must love volleyball-burgers-fillinwhateverthingyouthinkistypicallyamerican\u201c \u2013 Oh yes, and all dogs love to herd sheep, too. People are different. I am not all Americans. I have my own preferences just like every other human all over the world. Dont jump to conclusions about me. You can ask all of these as open ended questions and I will be happy to give my opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talking unclearly with lots of slang and filler words. \u2013 If youre having a conversation with me and I say what, that probably doesnt mean that I dont understand your words in and of themselves, rather that you didnt speak clearly. Or that you used so many filler words that I lost track of what you were saying. If I say what, instead of switching to my language or talking to me like I am a child, try just repeating what you said again more clearly. Then I have the chance to either reinforce my learning, ask you to clarify your point, or point out a specific word that I didnt understand. This way you also treat me more like an equal, and trust me, that is an amazing feeling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nebo, \u017ee jste pou\u017eili tolik v\u00fdpl\u0148ov\u00fdch slov, a\u017e jsem se ztratila v tom, co jste cht\u011bli \u0159\u00edct.
